Tournament Details

2017 is the third year for the new Division I Qualification Structure. Just like last year, if wish to compete in the Division I State Championships you must qualify in one of two ways:

  1. Placing in the Top 5 of East Invite (April 8/9th @ Dick’s)
  2. Take one of the remaining bids by competing and finishing in one of those spots at your District Qualifying Tournament (April 15-29 TBD, Locations TBD)

It should be noted right off the bat that you do not need to concern yourself with this if you already plan on competing in Division II or the Girls Division.

Also, no teams will be turned away from the State Championships. If you do not qualify for the DI Tournament, you are still more than welcome in DII.

PLEASE NOTE: District Lines were modified in 2016 due to the growth of youth ultimate in Colorado Springs. A fourth district has been added. Please see the map of the new districts (North, East, South and West) AND also note the change in number of bids and wild card bids per district, below.

How Unused Bids are Awarded

Any Unused Bids by any one district will get relocated based on reverse order (5,4,3,2,1) 2nd place finishers (ie if a bid goes unused by a district, that extra bid goes first to the 2nd place finisher for Bid #5 (growth) and then to the 2nd place finisher for Bid #4 (size), etc.
When there are less than 16 teams are requesting to play DI – When there are less than 16 requesting to play DI State, the tournament will host a set number of teams based on this schedule:

  • >16 – 16 team DI Tournament (Bids are awarded as written)
  • 15-12 – 12 team DI Tournament (each division starts with one less auto bid)
  • 11-10 – 10 team DI Tournament (each division starts with one less auto bid and no size or growth bids awarded)
  • 9-8 – 8 team DI Tournament (each division gets one bid and the last 4 bids awarded will be Strength 1 and 2 along with Size and Growth)
  • <8 – A round robin Tournament will include all teams

How a Team can Qualify for a Bid

  • Teams must qualify to play in DI Open (Spring) and/or DI Mixed (Fall) State Championships
  • Here is how a team can qualify for a BID in their District:

Qualification #1

If your team finishes in the top 5 of the Mid Season Tourney (East Invite, Monarch Invite) AND your district has a bid to offer you, that team auto qualifies for DI state.

These are given in order of standing at the Qualifying event.

(Any one district cannot award all of its bids at this event. At least one bid must be kept for the DistrictQualifier Event)

For example:
If a team is a top 5 finisher at this event and that team finishes better then all other teams from their same district at this event, then that team qualifies.

If a team is in the top 5 finishers at this event and the team finishes at the same place as the district has bids, or worse, amongst its district at this event, then this team does not qualify.

Qualification #2

Remaining unqualified teams can qualify at a District (end of the season) Qualification Tournament/Event

Each of the 4 Districts will host an ‘end of the season’ qualifying Tournament/Event (if needed)

Final bids will be awarded to participating teams in order of final standings at the specific district qualifier.

Teams that have previously qualified or elect to play in DII, MAY attend their district qualifier. Their standing in the event is ignored for the purposes of other teams qualifying for the DI event.

However, this event, when possible, must be a one day event and free, played within 15 days of the State
Championship (the SYC and/or District Coordinator MAY require previously qualified teams and/or teams electing DII to NOT participate for the good of the qualifying event).

Qualification #3

If, and only if, a district has more bids to award than accepting teams, those teams can qualify without a district qualifying tournament/event.

For example:
District ‘x’ has 5 bids to award. 2 of the 5 were awarded at the ‘mid season’ tournament and only 3 other teams with in that district are requesting a bid. Those 3 teams would be awarded, automatically, the 3 remaining bids.

If Division ‘y’ has 4 bids to award and only 1 bid was awarded at the ‘mid season’ tournament and 4 teams wish to play DI with the 3 remaining slots, a District qualifying event is required for those 4 teams.
